No answers in building a Britain that works for all - Ashworth

labourpress

Jonathan Ashworth, Labour’s Shadow Minister without Portfolio, commenting on Theresa May’s interview on the Andrew Marr show, said:

“In her first set piece interview Theresa May gave us no answers on the issues facing working people.

“She told us she wants a country that ‘works for everyone’, yet admitted over last few years the majority of people have seen no benefit from the government she has been part of. Crucially she offered no plan whatsoever to help those losing out.

“She talked about building on David Cameron’s “success” in education. Such “success” has seen class sizes soar and more unqualified teachers. What’s more she refused to rule out dividing children with new grammar schools.

“She is pressing ahead with damaging NHS policies which have pushed junior doctors to strike while patients suffer from soaring waiting lists.

“She boasted she is apparently not afraid to take on big interests but couldn’t explain why she had buckled and backtracked on the government’s obesity strategy.

“On the biggest issue facing us immediately - Brexit - there is still no plan to protect working people from economic risk and complete lack of clarity on whether government policy is in favour of access to the single market

“The truth is Theresa May and her Tory Government have failed working people for six years. The faces at the top may have changed but sadly the approach remains the same: failed policies which favour the privileged few at the top but do nothing to build a Britain that works for all.“
